When Disney released the first image from its highly-anticipated live-action Mulan revealing Chinese singer-actress Crystal Liu Yifei as the titular character in 2018, the studio also stated that the film will be based on the 4th Century narrative poem, “The Ballad of Mulan”, more than its hit 1998 animated feature. No Li Shang, no Mushu, and no Donny Osmond singing that he’ll make a man out of you either.
